Stinging nettle has a counterirritant effect which can override musculoskeletal pain. When pain occurs in muscles and tissues, blood supply is hindered due to the build-up of toxins in those areas, which are highlighted by visual markers such as swelling and stiffness. Pain can be alleviated by improving blood circulation which is exactly what nettle does.
Ginger works by blocking certain body chemicals (like prostaglandins) that cause pain. It also acts as an antioxidant and stops a molecule called NF-kB, which can worsen pain. Additionally, it activates certain pain-sensing receptors, helping to reduce the feeling of pain.
Frankincense is rich in Boswellic acids which work by blocking certain processes in the body that create inflammatory compounds like leukotrienes. They even slow down the damage to cartilage and other tissues.
